Lebanon: Gov't says Cholera under control

Beirut, Dec. 7 (Petra) -- The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health Wednesday announced that the cholera epidemic is 'under control' following a limited number of confirmed daily infections.

Minister of Health Firas Abyad told journalists that 'the number of confirmed cases reached 635, while the cumulative number, to which suspected cases are added, reached 4912 cases.'

Abyad said the Ministry had vaccinated more than 500,000 people, 80 per cent of the targeted population, adding that 'even if the cholera epidemic was under control, the measures to limit the spread are not solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Health, but rather other things are supposed to be secured, starting with securing safe water and sanitation networks.'

He noted that his Ministry 'is working in this field with other ministries to secure what is required and reach the stage of ending the epidemic,' stressing that 'the rapid cholera examination is secured in all government hospitals, and it is free for those who show symptoms.'
